Alumni Launch Five-Point Agenda to Rebuild Alma Mater

The St Teresa’s College Nsukka Old Boys’ Association (STOBA) Worldwide has unveiled an ambitious N1 billion infrastructure renewal initiative aimed at revitalising its alma mater and restoring the institution’s tradition of academic excellence.

The President of STOBA Worldwide, HRH Professor Johnny Chibueze Eluka, announced the initiative during the association’s 2026 National Convention, held at St Teresa’s College, Nsukka, Enugu State, from October 23 to 25, 2026.

Professor Eluka described the fundraising initiative as a collective responsibility of all alumni, graduating sets, and branches of the association. He emphasised that rebuilding the institution would require unity, sustained commitment, and contributions from members across generations and locations.

According to him, the proposed intervention will address critical infrastructural deficiencies, including classrooms, laboratories, hostels, water supply, electricity, and other essential educational facilities. The ultimate goal is to create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.

"One billion naira is a bold target, yet it remains achievable when we recognise that support for our alma mater is a collective obligation. No single person, no single set, and no single branch can bear this burden alone," he said.

The STOBA president urged members to move beyond periodic reunions and translate their attachment to the college into practical interventions that improve the welfare of students and teachers.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the convention theme, "Restoring Excellence; Rebuilding the Base of Our Alma Mater," reflecting the association’s determination to ensure that present and future generations of students benefit from the quality of education and facilities that shaped previous generations of alumni.

STOBA Highlights Achievements and Infrastructure Needs

Reviewing his administration’s achievements since its election in October 2022, Professor Eluka disclosed that the association had established the STOBA GLOBAL platform to strengthen alumni mobilisation, revitalise branches, and improve the learning experience of the college’s more than 1,600 students.

He explained that an assessment conducted by the National Executive Committee revealed widespread deterioration of the school’s infrastructure. The findings prompted engagements with relevant stakeholders and efforts to identify sustainable ways of supporting the institution.

Professor Eluka also commended the convention’s Local Organising Committee, led by Ozo Chijioke Attah, for its dedication and commitment to the successful hosting of the three-day event.

Alumni Advocate Five-Point Agenda for Academic Renewal

Delivering the convention lecture, alumnus Okey Akobundu stressed that the responsibility for restoring the college’s former glory rests substantially with its alumni.

He called on former students to demonstrate a renewed sense of ownership by providing the resources, leadership, and sustained support needed to reposition the institution for academic excellence.

To achieve this objective, Akobundu proposed a five-point agenda:

Return to the School: Encourage alumni to reconnect with the college and participate actively in its development.

Re-equip Educational Facilities: Upgrade classrooms, laboratories, hostels, and other essential infrastructure to improve the learning environment.

Motivate Teachers: Promote initiatives that recognise, encourage, and support teachers in delivering quality education.

Reorient Students: Strengthen discipline, responsibility, and commitment to academic achievement among students.

Reconnect Alumni with Their Alma Mater: Establish periodic interventions and sustained engagement between former students and the institution.

Akobundu urged alumni to contribute meaningfully to the ?1 billion infrastructure initiative, regardless of the size of their individual donations. He maintained that collective action and sustained commitment would be crucial to achieving the target.

He further emphasised that restoring the college’s academic standing would require more than infrastructure development. Teacher motivation, student discipline, and continuous engagement between the school and its alumni would also be essential to achieving lasting improvements.

Chairman of the Occasion Charges Students on Discipline and Excellence

During an on-the-spot assessment of the college’s facilities conducted by the Principal, Rev. Fr. Paul Alli, the Chairman of the Occasion, Hon. Chinedu Onu, encouraged students to remain focused on their studies and aspire to become responsible and influential members of society.

Onu urged the students to embrace discipline, respect their teachers and parents, and abide by the school’s rules and regulations.

He assured them that the alumni association would continue to intervene in the affairs of the institution and support efforts aimed at restoring its former glory.

Convention Celebrates Alumni Milestones and Elects New Executives

The three-day convention featured the celebration of the golden jubilee of the 1976 graduating class and the silver jubilee of the 2001 graduating class, marking 50 and 25 years respectively.

Other activities included a fundraising session, a novelty football match, and a banquet. The convention also featured the election of new national executives to steer the affairs of the association.

The election returned HRM Professor Johnny Chibueze Eluka as National President.

A Renewed Commitment to the Future of St Teresa’s College

The ?1 billion infrastructure renewal initiative represents a major step towards mobilising alumni resources and coordinating targeted interventions to address the college’s most pressing needs.

Through this initiative, STOBA Worldwide seeks to strengthen the institution’s capacity to deliver quality education while preserving its legacy and restoring its reputation for academic excellence.

The success of the project will depend on the collective commitment of alumni, the cooperation of relevant stakeholders, and sustained engagement with the school community.

As STOBA embarks on this ambitious undertaking, the message from the 2026 National Convention is clear: restoring St Teresa’s College requires more than memories of its glorious past; it demands collective action to secure its future.
